Graz Dress
Every time we touch a piece of clothing, one of the most important things is how it feels to the touch. Is it soft or is it rough? Is it light or is it heavy? This texture becomes even more important when we dress with it because let's be honest, there are fabrics that feel great and others that don’t.
But what makes the difference? When choosing fashion pieces we love, we mostly focus on their design, color, and fit. But there’s always that extra factor that makes a piece memorable, and that is the material that composes it.
What are the different types of fabrics?
The main difference between textiles is marked by their provenance. Overall, there are two types of fabrics: natural and synthetic. The latter are many times derived from petroleum and are more commonly known as polyester, nylon, or spandex. On the other hand, natural fabrics are derived from nature; that can be of vegetable, animal, or mineral origin. Some examples of these include linen, cotton, and silk.
The industry’s shift towards sustainable or circular fashion, has redirected the focus to slow fashion and the use of natural fabrics (amongst many other changes). This look towards nature has left behind the dominant use of synthetic fabrics because their production - and consumption - results detrimental to the environment.
Why choose natural fabrics?
Natural fabrics are not only more sustainable but they are also more hypoallergenic. That is why 90% of our garments are made of natural fabrics. Learn more about their benefits below.
Cotton

Cotton fabrics come directly from the cotton plant. It is one of the most popular textiles due to its softness and permeability. Garments made of 100% cotton are perfect for hot climates as they absorb moisture quickly and keep you cool.
The fashion industry's move towards sustainability has made organic cotton garments highly prominent because of their biodegradability. As a consequence, these pieces generate less waste, fulfilling the purpose behind circular fashion.
Another plus of garments made of cotton is that they are easy to wash and are highly durable; which means they will last longer in your closet. In addition, since they are composed of a natural fiber, they are hypoallergenic and better for sensitive skin.
Linen

Linen comes from the flax plant, also known as linseed and is one of the oldest materials in the world. In fact, its use can be traced back to 8000 BC since it was commonly used by the ancient Egyptians. This material resists high temperatures and is also permeable, which makes it perfect for summer.
Compared to cotton, linen is even more sustainable as its production requires less water and energy. It also generates less waste because the entire flax plant is used for other purposes. Finally, linen garments are fully biodegradable, and are of even longer durability than cotton, making them the shining star of circular fashion.
With proper care, linen pieces can last up to three decades in your closet. In addition, the antibacterial properties of this material make it better for you and the environment.
Unlike synthetic fibers, the production and use of natural fibers ensures that the fashion industry redirects itself to a more sustainable place. Garments made of natural materials such as cotton and linen are not only breathable and perfect for warmer weather, but they can also return to their origin once they run their course, making them essential components to making circular fashion a reality.
